North Korea's Internet Consists of Just 28 Websites
A mistake by a North Korean tech administrator has revealed that the country has just 28 registered domains, according to various media reports.
This was exposed after one of North Korea's nameservers was incorrectly configured to reveal a list of all the domain names under the domain .kp.
Security engineer Matt Bryant made the discovery on Tuesday (Sep 20) and posted the data on the online repository hosting service Github, The Guardian reported.
Github said on its webpage: "One of North Korea's top level nameservers was accidentally configured to allow global DNS zone transfers.
"This data gives us a better picture of North Korea's domains and top level DNS (Domain Name System)."
According to reports by tech online news portal Gizmodo, which carried screenshots of the webpages, many of the sites belonged to official government bodies such as the state-owned airline Air Koryo as well as the Maritime Administration of North Korea.
There were also sites on North Korean cuisine, featuring recipes, and movies.
For example, food site cooks.org.kp is filled with pictures of "Korea's famous recipes", reported the BBC. It has a listing of all the main restaurants in North Korea including Okryugwan - famous for its Pyongyang style cold noodle - as well as the Pyongyang Dog Meat Restaurant.
State owned news organisations like Pyongyang Broadcasting Service and Rodong Sinmun are also among the 28, according to a Reddit page.
Recent headlines on Rodong Sinmun include “Kim Jong-un sends birthday spreads to veteran scholars”, and “Narcotic-related crimes increase among South Korean youngsters”, reported The Guardian.
